What is Aikido...?

Aikido is a unique Japanese martial art that develops your mind, body and spirit through an integrated training program that encompasses empty hand (tai-jutsu), wooden sword (bokken) and wooden staff (Jo).

The training takes place in a safe, friendly, non-competative group environment, at a pace that is tailored to your ability. Gradings are held periodically to advance you through five preliminary (Kyu) levels and the subsequent black belt (Dan) grades. Dedicated training, physical and mental proficiency, combined with etiquette and maturity are important prerequisites for advancement in the art.

"True victory is self victory."

[ Morihei Ueshiba ]

Traditional Budo Training

What differentiates Aikido from other traditional martial arts is that it's empty-hand techniques are derived from the body movements, martial strategy and mental focus of Japanese swordsmanship. An understanding of how each empty-hand technique relates back to the principles of Japanese swordsmanship is fundamental to the martial art of Aikido.

The free flowing circular movements of Aikido enable you to redirect the flow of energy from an opponent without having to clash with the force of the attack. This non-aggressive strategy allows you to effectively defend yourself without the need to employ the destructive punching and kicking techniques that characterise other combat arts.

This traditional budo training not only enables you to effectively defend yourself against multiple armed or unarmed attackers, it is one of the best 'mind, body and spirit' training systems available today.

"Aikido techniques employ four qualities that reflect the nature of our world. Depending on the circumstance, you should be: hard as a diamond, flexible as a willow, smooth-flowing like water, or as empty as space."

[ Morihei Ueshiba ]
